• Martin Ridge, retired police officer and author of Breaking the Silence
Martin Ridge was a police officer in Donegal, Ireland and investigated three cases of child abuse. Two were within the management of the Catholic church, a priest and a teacher, in the late 1990s/early 2000s.

There are deep theological problems which help to create a climate where the abuse of women and children can take place within the church. Certain theological stances are fundamentally dangerous to women, children and vulnerable adults.

For 15 years I have engaged with churches in a discourse on the violence against women in the church. The abuse of adult women by ministers and priests is hard to be heard.

The treatment, indifference and re-victimisation of survivors by church members is worse than the sexual abuse and assaults. There is a moral lasting consequence to their actions.

• Margaret Kennedy, MACSAS
Of the 63 women who took part in the research 38 had been abused in childhood: 66% sexually abused, 71% emotionally abused, 42% physically abused; 21% psychologically abused.

• Maeve Lewis, Director of One in Four, Ireland
One in Four took its name from a survey which found that one in four people reported having been sexually abused in childhood.

This is part of Pennington County Child Care Association (PCCA).
CCPAS offers training and advice to churches and individuals on all aspects of child protection. They have recently published a Video and Training pack for churches called Facing the Unthinkable: Protecting Children from Abuse. The video, ‘A duty to Care’, can be ordered separately for £25.
